How to make a digital wedding invitation on Canva for free (and actually collect RSVPs)
Canva is the quickest way to design a beautiful invitation without design skills, and the free plan is enough. What it doesn’t handle on its own is the practical part: who’s coming, who with and what they’ll eat. Here are the steps in Canva, and how to pair its design with RSVPs that sort themselves.
Can you make a digital wedding invitation on Canva for free?
Yes: on Canva’s free plan you can design the invitation, download it as a PNG, JPG, PDF or MP4 and text it to guests without paying anything. Templates with a crown icon belong to Canva Pro; filter by “Free” and you still have plenty of wedding designs to start from. What Pro adds — premium elements, the background remover, a custom domain — isn’t needed for an invitation.
Step by step: your invitation in Canva
- Search “wedding invitation” on Canva, in the browser or the phone app, and filter for free templates.
- Pick the size for where it will be seen: 1080 × 1920 px portrait for phones (the Stories size), or the classic 5 × 7 in card if you’ll also print it.
- Swap in your names, date, time and venues: ceremony and reception. Keep a script font for your names only and a plain one for the details: on a six-inch screen, the time should be readable without zooming.
- Upload your photo and double-click it to fit the frame; if the template came with a stock photo, replace it or delete it.
- Add the invitation wording and the RSVP deadline, for example “Kindly reply by May 10”.
- Download it in the right format (see below) or share Canva’s view-only link.
PNG, PDF, video or link: which file to send guests
- PNG or JPG: shows right in the text thread, nothing to open. Best for the first impression, but links inside it don’t work.
- PDF Standard: keeps the links you add, so the map and RSVP buttons are tappable; the trade-off is that guests have to open a file.
- MP4: an animated invitation or a photo slideshow. It’s heavier and messaging apps compress it, so check that small text is still legible.
- Canva’s view-only link: opens the design in a browser without downloading it and shows your latest edits, but it can’t collect replies.
How to make a Canva invitation interactive: links in the PDF
A Canva invitation becomes “interactive” when each button carries a link: select the text or element, click the link icon (Ctrl + K, or Cmd + K on a Mac) and paste the address. The three links couples use most are Google Maps for the ceremony, Google Maps for the reception, and an RSVP link — your online RSVP, or a WhatsApp link (wa.me/ followed by the full number with country code, no “+”) if that’s how your family talks. Download it as a PDF Standard: in a PNG or JPG the links are lost. Adding ?text= to a WhatsApp link pre-fills the message, for example:
“Hi! RSVP yes for Emma & Daniel’s wedding. Name: … · Plus-one: … · Meal: … · Allergies: …”
What about RSVPs? What Canva can and can’t do
Canva can collect replies, but it won’t manage your guest list. With Canva Websites you can publish a free site at an address like yournames.my.canva.site (up to five sites on a free account; a custom domain needs Canva Pro), and Canva Forms adds a form whose answers land in a Canva Sheets table. A WhatsApp button turns every RSVP into a chat you copy by hand. What’s left to you: adding up yeses and plus-ones, counting meals and allergies, spotting who hasn’t replied so you can nudge them, and turning it all into a seating chart. For twenty guests that’s fine; for a hundred and fifty, it’s an evening with a spreadsheet every week.
Canva vs. a wedding invitation website with RSVP: where each one wins
- Design: Canva wins. Any font, illustration or layout you like; with an invitation website you choose from ready-made designs and change the text and photos.
- Paper and video: Canva wins. The same design works for printed cards (PDF Print with crop marks), Instagram Stories and a video.
- RSVPs: the website wins. Each guest replies inside the invitation, naming every plus-one, with their meal and allergies, and the dashboard adds it all up.
- Last-minute changes: the website wins. If the time changes you fix it once and the same link shows the new detail; a PNG or PDF that’s already out has to be sent again.
- Cost: both can be free. Canva, as long as you skip Pro elements; here the invitation, the RSVPs and the dashboard are free, with no card and one invitation per account.
The best of both: your Canva design with your invitation’s QR code
You don’t have to pick one: design the card in Canva and let the replies go to an invitation website. Build your invitation in the editor (free, and no account needed to design it), publish it, download its QR code from the dashboard and add it to your Canva design next to “Scan to RSVP”; in the PDF, link the “RSVP” button to your invitation’s address. The QR code also replaces the RSVP card in a printed suite. You text the pretty card or mail it on paper, and every reply lands in a dashboard like this one, with meals, allergies and tables. See what guests get in the sample invitation.
What to write on the invitation and in the text
The wording on a Canva invitation is the same as on any other: names, date, time, venues and RSVP deadline, in that order. You’ll find formal, casual and religious examples in wedding invitation wording, and the deadline and reminder texts for people who don’t reply in the wedding RSVP guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canva free for wedding invitations?
Yes. On the free plan you can use templates without the crown icon, upload your photos and download as PNG, JPG, PDF and MP4. You only need Canva Pro for premium elements, the background remover or a custom domain.
Can guests RSVP to a Canva invitation?
In a PDF, through a button with a link; on a Canva website, with Canva Forms, whose answers land in a table. If you want plus-ones, meals and allergies to add up on their own, link the button to an invitation website with RSVP.
What’s the best way to send a Canva wedding invitation?
A PNG or JPG if you just want it to show in the text thread, a PDF Standard if it has buttons with links, and the link to an online invitation alongside it so guests can RSVP in one tap.
How do I add a QR code to a Canva invitation?
Download your invitation’s QR code and upload it as an image, or use Canva’s QR code app with your invitation’s address. Keep it at least 0.8 in (2 cm) wide if you print it.
Is Canva or a wedding website better?
Canva for design, paper and Stories; a wedding website for RSVPs and last-minute changes. The easiest option is to use both: the Canva design with the website’s QR code.
